Getting Started (Hockey 101)

The first question is often “where do we get started?” As of 2023, the RHA has outlined three key steps in working toward game play:

Step 1: Learn to Skate: Offered at all nearby rinks (e.g., Sport-o-Rama, Ice Vault, Fritz Dietl, etc.) throughout the year, these 4-10 week courses offer the easiest entry point. They are focused on skating for beginners and emerging skaters. No experienced necessary. Skates are the only equipment requirement. Generally Ages 4 & Up.

Step 2: Beginner Hockey Clinics: Once a child has learned to glide (usually completing a Learn-to-Skate program), they're ready for beginner hockey clinics.  Examples include: (1) the Ice Vault's "Atom's Clinic," which is offered year-round; and (2) the NJ Devils and NY Rangers offer "Learn to Play" Programs throughout the area at nearby rinks. These programs integrate beginner skating instruction with basic hockey skills in a way that prioritizes having fun. Generally Ages 4 - 10.

Step 3: House League: After completing a beginner's clinic, most children are ready for House League. These leagues are beginner-friendly, generally organized by local towns, played at local rinks, and only offer game play (no practices). To augment House League, players can also continue participation in Beginner's Clinics and/or Learn-to-Skate programs to supplement league participation with more skills training.  Generally Ages 5 & Up.

Separately, off the ice,  RHA periodically offers street hockey events based on volunteer capacity and player interest.  These events provide a great opportunity for participants to gauge their interest in the sport and determine whether they want to move on to ice hockey.  Many of RHA’s ice hockey players get started in the street hockey program.
